Rise in Diet Pill Use Among Teen Girls
Tuesday October 31, 2006
TwinCities.com is reporting in this article that ‘one in five women ages 19 to 20 used diet pills, according to the Project EAT (Eating Among Teens) survey released Monday. One in five also admitted using diet pills or laxatives, vomiting or skipping meals - strategies the researchers characterized as very unhealthy.’ In an age where companies are beginning to market skinny jeans, of course there is an increase. These types of increases tend to work their way down in age over short periods of time. Please talk to your teen daughter about her body image and build her self-esteem so that she has the skills to avoid these problems and she’ll know she has your support.

Conventional media such as television shows and the magazines disseminate images of teens that look slim, and sexy. For the average teenage girl, its tough to live up to such a compelling stereotype. To keep up, they usually resort to unsafe diet plans and over the counter diet pills. They are all doing this in an effort to look as good or better than what they see on television. In some cases, it could lead to an unhealthy life style or other medical abnormalities.
