Communication: Identify Your Door Slammers

Sunday February 11, 2007
Simple statements like 'Don't talk to me in that tone' are door slammers when communicating with your teenager. The problem lies in the automatic way we say these type of phrases. I believe many of mine come from my own parents. You know the times that you sit back and think, 'Geezz, I sound just like my mom!'

So take 10 minutes and think of three phrases that you use. Write them down. Now think about the last time you used them and how you could have avoided it. By identifying your door slammers, you will be on the look out for them, and be better able to avoid using them.
