Parenting Tip #8: Before Every Orthodontic Appointment

Wednesday January 23, 2008
Before going to the orthodontist for a regular adjustment of your teen’s braces, have some non-aspirin pain reliever for him/her to take if he/she feels there is a need. Some parents have mentioned to me to give the pain reliever before your teen goes, I know this is what I did as a teen. It always seem to work as adjustments to the braces can cause a bit of discomfort.

Keeping a chap stick in the glove compartment of the car is also a good idea. Have your teen apply it to keep their lips from getting chapped when their braces are being worked on. Allow your teen to carry the chap stick into the appointment and then return it to the glove compartment for the next appointment. Do you have any tips to share? Leave them in the comments area.

We always have a water bottle in the car. It seems like he dosn’t like the taste in his mouth or he is dry after they work on his mouth.

I am not a parent but a teen. But when I went it was usually hard to eat after I had n adjustment. So my mom would take me to the store and let me pick out a jello or pudding mix or applesause or Marshmellos or something else soft. also remind your teen to follow the orthodtist instrustions on wearing bands or tightening appience. the more they listen the qucker they come off. One last thought, it helps if after tightening at home if you eat or drink some thing cold. if they can’t stand the pain before heading off to school call the doc because they will get nothing done if their teeth are sore.(maybe your teeth an d brain are attatched):#
