Book Review: Why Bad Grades Happen to Good Kids

Thursday May 15, 2008
I liked this book and found much of the information very valuable to parents of teens that want to get a handle of how school fits into their teen’s life and what they can do to help their teen achieve. I had a hard time with some of the examples, as I didn’t see how these teens in crisis fit with the overall theme of the book, which spoke to me as a preventative rather than a fix-it type of book.

I think my son could be the star of the book “Why bad grades happen to good kids.” My son has a high functioning form of Autism - Asperger’s Syndrome. It’s been difficult for him in school since the 2nd grade! It’s only gotten worse, now that he’s in high school. He was doing private tutoring for a while, but even with intensive educating, he has still failed 2 out of the three subjects! In Algebra, he rec’d a 65, which I believe is passing, but barely. He is very hard on himself about his bad grades, and calls himself “stupid” a lot. I’m constantly telling him that I also had a hard time in school also, due to a learning disability, and it has nothing to do with being stupid! I told him that just b/c you get bad grades doesn’t mean you won’t be successful in life! Look at Steven Spielberg and George Lucas… They both failed out of film school, yet they both made a couple of little films!
