Have a Family Competition and Feed the Hungry at the Same Time

Monday August 25, 2008
I saw this site in the news and was reminded of it by a friend, FreeRice.com. According to the site, its purpose is twofold:
  1. Provide English vocabulary to everyone for free.
  2. Help end world hunger by providing rice to hungry people for free.
What you do is answer the correct definition of the word given and you earn 20 grains of rice. Well, you don’t actually earn the 20 grains of rice. The sponsors donate enough money for the 20 grains of rice to be sent directly to the UN World Food Program. The more correct answers you give, the more rice that goes to the hungry. It's a pretty good cause and will make for fun family conversation.

As of this moment my family is still in the dark about the competition I’m setting up with them. I will let them in on it at dinner and see what they have to say. Currently, and I’m up to 740 grains of rice. Let me know how you and your family is doing in the comments area and I’ll update as we go.

What a great way to combine education and the act of giving. Thanks for sharing! I can’t wait to share with my family.

We’re up to about 30,000 grains of rice here in the Witmer household. I think my middle daughter has gotten the most so far.
