Picking a College: 4 Key Tips for Parents

So, whose life is it anyway? That is what you may hear from school counselors, friends, relatives and perhaps even your teen. When it comes to choosing a college, it is definitely your teen’s life. Which is why you need to be a big part of that decision. Opening up your teen’s eyes to all of his/her options and setting the standard is parenting. It’s caring enough to shoulder some of the load, do some of the work and be their support person. On the flip side, doing everything for your teen and being a pushover parent isn’t the answer either.

How have you learned to walk the thin line between parenting and over-parenting? Let us know in the comments area.

I rarely give advice unless I feel my daughter is really on the wrong track. She’s 17 and pretty level headed. When she was preteen I spent a lot of time LISTENING and talking to her at bedtime and really shared tons of stories of my childhood. At this age she was like a sponge for my insight. I think you must really infuse them with life lessons from age 8 to 12 and them back off and just be there if they need your advice. The key is the relationship you establish prior to age 13
