5 Tips To Get Your Teen To Help With Spring Cleaning

By , About.com Guide

Spring has sprung and it's time to clean out and organize for the year. The best way to do this is as a family. So, here are five tips to help you get your teenager to pitch in.

Set a Date and Time
Pre-warning your teen will always go a long way. Let them know specifically that they are expected to be home at this time and they will be cleaning. Write it down in black and white if there is a need. Try to schedule it when you know they don't have plans, and tell them not to make any for that day at all. I have been caught in the trap of, "Ok, I'll be home at noon on Saturday, but I need to go do homework with Bob at 3pm." Then nothing gets done between noon and 3pm. and off they run. Just in case you weren't aware, the general consensus is they would rather do homework!

Involve Everyone in the House
Teens tend to do their fair share when they see everyone else doing the same. They are not about to pour their heart into scubbing if their siblings or you are doing something else.

Make a List and Check it Twice
Before you start, make a list of what needs done. Then expand the list into simply jobs. Example, the bathrooms need to be cleaned, what does this mean? Well, the toilet, sink, and tub need disinfected, the floor washed, the mirror shined, and the linen closet wiped out and organized. Writing this out will save you the aggravation of hauling them back to the bathroom after they have walked in wiped down the counter and come out saying, "I'm done!"

You should always start them in their room, but give them a time limit, otherwise, they will spend the whole time in there, and you will get no help elsewhere in the house. If they don't get it done in that time, have them go back later to finish.

Show Them How
Just because your teen has seen you wash the sink before, does not mean they took notes as to what you used or how you did it. You may need to give them instruction on what to use to clean what. For some great tips on cleaning, check out About.com's Housekeeping site.

Give an Incentive
If you give an allowance, up the amount a bit this week. If not, offer to pay for a movie. Better yet, since you've done this as a family, do something fun as a family. Rewards are as important as discipline is, give some positive reinforcement. My favorite reward for Spring Cleaning is a trip to the nearest ice cream shop. Which is a yummier way of remembering that the warm weather is coming!
