Teach Teens to Pack

By Denise Witmer, About.com

Teaching this simple skill to teach teenagers long before they will need it as adults. It is not only fun, but makes it easier when they leave for college.
Difficulty: Average
Time Required: 2 hours of communication
Here's How:
  1. Talk to your teen about where he/she is going and what items he/she would like to take along. Have him/her make a list.

  2. Show your teen the difference between an overnight bag and luggage that will last a week. Explain how much luggage will be allowed, ie. on an airplane, or that will fit in the car.

  3. Ask your teen to place all of the tiems he/she will need on his/her bed to get ready to pack.

  4. Show your teen how to roll or fold his/her clothing so it will not wrinkle and everything fits into the bags.

  5. Show your teen how to place big things in the luggage first, then fit shoes, underwear and socks in and around the other things.

  6. Show them how to put toiletries in plastic baggies, use soap and toothbrush holders, etc.

  7. If they are going on a trip via air, explain what should be put in a 'carry on' bag, ie gum, book or magazine to read, identification, etc. Print out and go over the rules for airline travel with your teen.

Tips:
  1. If your teen does a lot of traveling, purchase his/her own luggage.

  2. As time goes by allow your teens to do this on their own. If they forget something one time, they'll never forget it again.

  3. Do you agree that using the real world is a great way to teach your teen?
