How To Take Teens Caroling For a Cause

By Denise Witmer, About.com

Local youth organizations can benefit from this in two ways. First, it will help monetarily. Second, it will bring more community awareness about the organization.
Difficulty: Average
Time Required: 3 weeks

Here's How:

  1. Pick a date. Find out which teens would like to attend and send a flyer home to all parents.

  2. Have the teens pick the songs, write out the words, and make copies.

  3. Three weeks before hand write a press release and send it into your local paper.

  4. Make a flyer about your organization to hand out to the people you carol for. Not all will have money to donate that evening, so put an address on the flyer.

  5. Ask adults to help, a five teens to one adult ratio is good.

  6. Put one adult in charge of the donations. As you receive them, jot down the address and send a thank you note.

  7. Have a 'one adult-one teen' team knock on the doors first and ask for permission to carol, before the whole group shows up.

  8. End the evening with hot chocolate and cookies.

  9. Take pictures and send another press release to the local paper with a picture. Thank the community.

Tips:

  1. Plan it for a Thursday evening as opposed to Friday or Saturday. Families are busy on the weekends, especially during the holidays.

  2. Battery operated candles make an excellent effect.

  3. Do you feel you have open communication with your teen?
