How To Do the Hokey Pokey

By Denise Witmer, About.com

This dance is very well known and young teens love to do it.For extra fun, try it on roller skates!
Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: 30 minutes

Here's How:

  1. Have everyone form a large circle giving each other a little shoulder room.

  2. While singing the hokey pokey song, do the actions. The song is the same as the actions.

  3. 'You put your left foot in' - means put it into the circle of people.

  4. 'You put your left foot out' - means putting it out of the circle, almost behind you.

  5. 'You put your left foot in' (see #3) 'and you shake it all about.'

  6. 'You do the hokey pokey and you turn yourself around.' The hokey pokey is putting hands up above your shoulders and waving them, you do this while turning in a circle.

  7. Then you clap as you sing 'that's what it's all about!'

  8. After finishing all body parts, the people in the circle link together by placing their arms over the shoulders of the people next to them.

  9. Then as you sing 'do the hokey pokey' over and over again, the whole group turns in a circle.

Tips:

  1. This is a lot of fun for all ages! Just make sure you bring some sense of humor with you to the circle.

  2. Do you feel you have open communication with your teen?

    See the poll results.
