"I purchased a used car for each of my two daughters after they turned 16, so that they could easily get to jobs without us shuttling them, but expected them to pay for the added cost of the car insurance for their cars (but not for the increase in premium for our cars due to having teenage drivers). They also paid for gas and regular maintenance, but we shared larger repair costs (e.g., alternator). I felt that they could not afford to pay the full amount while maintaining part time jobs and decent grades in high school, but I felt that they should help pay some of the costs - and insurance specifically was tied to their driving record." ~ SHERMANWC from our Support and Advice Forum
