I've said it before and I'll say it again, the Internet is the best tool for resourceful parents of today's teenagers. A prime example of this is our forum, where we are able to provide support to parents just by being ourselves. Therefore, letting other parents know that they are not alone with these tough issues that surround our teenagers.
Another prime example are the national organizations that are now capable of reaching so many more parents, teachers and teenagers through their websites. I've decided to award one such site The Best of the Net Award at About.com for site excellence. The site is The National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy.
This is a grass roots movement that has been capable of catering to parents of teenagers with up to date facts and statistics, tips and much more. Their design is such that they can relay their message to you and your teenager without talking down to either age group. Their strategy is commendable, many are, but they have been able to take it and put it into practice within their webpages - not an easy trick.
To improve the life prospects of this generation and the next — and, in particular, to reduce child poverty — by influencing cultural values and building a more effective grass roots movement, the Campaign has adopted a five-pronged strategy:
Take a strong stand against teen pregnancy and attract new resources and powerful voices to this issue.
Enlist the help of the media.
Support and stimulate state and local action.
Lead a national discussion on the role of religion, culture, and public values in an effort to build common ground.
Make sure that local community efforts are based on the best information available.
Should you or anyone you know need information on teen pregnancy, this is the site to send them to.
