My New Year's Resolution

Happy New Year Everyone!!

For those of you that have been with me since we went live with the Parenting of Adolescents site this past year, thank you for your support and helpful hints! I appreciate all of you! I would also like to thank the Mining Co. for this wonderful opportunity the have provided here. Nowhere on the Net will you be able to find a more caring group of people who are dedicated to their sites.

When I took on this site, my #1 goal was to create an online community of parents of teens. I want to pass on the information I have learned through the years of parenting I have done.

For those of you that have not read my bio, I am a 'professional parent'. I help run a private teen home, and I will see my 34th teen graduate this year. These are normal teens, who lived under abnormal circumstances. I have dealt with abuse, drug addiction, suicide, and grief---as a parent, not a councilor. The unique aspect of my work is because this is a private teen home, where children come to live, I have the ability to love them, and become part of their lives. On a side note, I think the state institutions could learn a lot here ;-)

Some of my beliefs:

  • I believe that parents are doing the best they can, and that parenting is the hardest job you every have to do.
  • I believe today's society is makes it very hard to parent a teen.
  • I believe that every child is as different as their finger prints.
  • I believe that knowledge is power. The more knowledge you have, the more able you are to make good decisions.
  • I believe that every child needs someone to love them enough to be :
    a shoulder to cry on.
    a security blanket.
a brick wall when they need to be told no.
a silent partner when they make their own decisions.
a safety net, to catch them when they fall.
My favorite prayer, and why:

God, grant me the courage to change the things I can.
(I see what is in store for 'my kids', or what they have been through, and believe me, I get scared.)
the serenity to accept the things I cannot change.
(Only if I have to. My boss is big on telling me, 'Denise, you can't change the world!' My standard answer to him is 'Why not?')
and the wisdom to know the difference.
(I say this line twice, I really need help in this area!)

My New Year's Resolution

To provide a place for parents to go to

share experiences, both good and bad.
gain as much knowledge as possible about the world that is out there.
help other parents.
change the world?? (Who knows? Maybe together we can!)

To help as many Worthwhile Causes as I can thru my site. My newest cause is with the Cyber Angels. Please check them out! Also, please bookmark my Worthwhile Causes page. When you and your family are around the computer, take a look every once in a while. The National Center for Missing Children is an active link. It shows pictures of children who are missing and is always being updated. The more people who see these pictures, the better chance these children have.
