Babysitter, Babysitting

By , About.com Guide

Definition: A babysitter is a person who watches children for short periods of time for a fee. Babysitting is the act of watching a child for a short time for a fee, it’s doing the job of being a babysitter.

Teens and older kids above the age of 11-years-old make money by babysitting for family, family friends and people in their community, but can also be a part of a babysitting network where they babysit for families they may not know as well. Community Centers run babysitting courses that can include child and infant CPR training for teen babysitters.

Babysitting as a Chore

Often the older child in a family will babysit younger children for their parents as a chore. They will either be paid a small fee or do it as part of their responsibility to their family. It is not uncommon for working parents to expect their older children to take care of their younger child after school on a regular basis as part of their family responsibility and not as a paid job.
