Affirmations: Teach Your Teen This Powerful Skill

By Denise Witmer, About.com

Positive self-talk, or affirmations, are a powerful skill that can boast and protect self-esteem even in the most trying times. Affirmations don’t have to be elaborate, a simple one to 5 word affirmation works best. “Yes, I can do this.” Works wonders when you are faced with a new challenge.

So, how do you convince your teen that this works and it isn’t ‘stupid’ to talk to yourself? Easy, model the behavior. This means you will need to develop some affirmations and speak them out loud when you need them. Your teen will at one point ask what you are doing. They may even roll their eyes when you explain and suggest they try it sometime. Most teens, however, will try it the next time you aren’t looking.
