Take the Time to Recognize and Change a Bad Habit

By Denise Witmer, About.com

However well meaning we as parents try to be, there are times when we lose it. Or, more frequently, we picked up a bad habit in our parenting skills and we rely on it too often.

The only way to get rid of a bad habit is to recognize it, figure out what triggered it, and then replace it with another, more positive behavior. Therefore, for this activity you will try to recognize one of your parenting ‘bad habits’. After you find it, write it down and list what triggered the behavior. Then answer these questions:

  • Can I change anything about what triggered this behavior? (Tired after work, hungry, frustrated with kids)
  • What would I have liked to do (good habit) instead of what I did (bad habit)?(I would like to use patience with my children instead of snap at them.)
  • Is there anything I can do to trigger the good habit?(ex. Take a deep breath before speaking.)

Do your best to try and replace your bad habit with the more positive behavior. If you mess up, that’s okay, just don’t give up.
