While parents do not want teens drinking alcohol at all, we need to be prepared to accept that if we find that our teens have been drinking, they may have a alcohol problem - including, but not limited to, an alcohol addiction. No, you should never over-react to any of your teen's behaviors, but you should not ignore the signs of alcoholism in your teen either.

It's a thin line and you are apt to fall on the wrong side of it no matter what you do. It has been my experience that being cautious and diligent in making sure your teen does not have a drinking problem and keeping up open communication with your teen works the best - even when you are wrong. You can always fall back and regroup.

The NIAAA gives parents these 7 warning signs of alcohol abuse to be on the look out for

  1. Mood changes: flare-ups of temper, irritability, and defensiveness.
  2. School problems: poor attendance, low grades, and/or recent disciplinary action.
  3. Rebelling against family rules.
  4. Switching friends, along with a reluctance to have you get to know the new friends.
  5. A "nothing matters" attitude: sloppy appearance, a lack of involvement in former interests, and general low energy.
  6. Finding alcohol in your child's room or backpack, or smelling alcohol on his or her breath.
  7. Physical or mental problems: memory lapses, poor concentration, bloodshot eyes, lack of coordination, or slurred speech.
Have you seen your teen exhibit these symptoms? If so, it's time to get your teen some help. Start by looking for resources in your local area and calling his doctor, who will have resources in your area for you to use. If your teen has developed a drinking problem, finding help can get your teen back on the right track to becoming a happy and successful young adult.
