My teen was rejected by the college of his choice. What do I say?

By Denise Witmer, About.com Guide

Question: My teen was rejected by the college of his choice. What do I say?
Answer: There is little you can do to comfort a teen who was not accepted into the college of their choice. Tell him you are sorry that it didn't work out and you hope that he'll look for other opportunities. He can choose to attend his second choice or attend another college and transfer into his first choice if he is able to make the grades.

Give your teen time to digest the rejection and see what he can come up with as a different path on his own. Be encouraging without being patronizing and offer your help - to visit other colleges, etc. - when he asks for it. Do not share this information with other people until your teen says it's okay, or allow him to tell family and friends - preferably when he is accepted to a college he wants to attend.
