How much help should parents give their teen with homework?

By , About.com Guide

Question: How much help should parents give their teen with homework?
Answer: My thoughts on giving school and homework help to your teen are straightforward, give them all that they need. When teens struggle with homework and don’t see a way to complete it or simply understand it, they may begin to procrastinate. If procrastinating on their homework becomes a habit with your teen, their grades will drop – and worse, they won’t be learning to succeed.

Be an active parent and either help yourself, if you know the subject of study, or find your teen the help they need by providing a tutor, letting your teen set up a time with the teacher and you provide transportation or using homework sites on the internet.

Note: There is a difference between helping your teen with their homework and doing their homework for them. Be sure your teen is actively involved in getting the work done and not out with friends while you type up their paper.
