Definition: The term dual diagnosis describes the combination of a mental health disorder and the abuse of drugs, problems that commonly occur together. Research suggests about half of teens abusing drugs also have underlying mental health issues that haven't been identified or addressed.

This interplay of symptoms creates a confusing cycle for many troubled teens because when they are treated for only one of these issues, they are not going to heal completely. Teens get into this cycle by self-medicating with street drugs in an effort to feel better. The effects of the drugs they choose to use often correspond to the feelings or issues they are unknowingly trying to treat.

For example, a depressed teen experiencing considerable fatigue experiments with cocaine in order to have more energy for a period of time. The result is usually the increasing use of drugs and no improvement of the depression, which in fact often worsens with the use of drugs.
