Definition: Presenting Problem is a term used by therapists to define the primary problem, or problems, that result in a teen needing professional help.
A clear description of the problem a teen is experiencing is needed to determine the best treatment option and establish goals for therapy. Describing specific behaviors or actions is the most helpful way to identify the primary problem.
For example: “ My teen yells at me when I ask him to do something” provides more useful information than, “dealing with my kid is impossible.”
