Science Fair Project Ideas - The Planet Mercury

Science Fair Projects for Middle and High School

By Denise Witmer, About.com

Mercury's day lasts longer than the time it takes to revolve once around the Sun. From a point near Mercury's equator, the Sun would appear to rise, then briefly set again, before resuming its path across the sky, all the while the size of the Sun in the sky would seem to be growing and shrinking as well. The same pattern would repeat as the sun set - it would dip below the horizon, briefly rise again, then return below the horizon.

Project Ideas:

  1. Build a scale model of our solar system.
  2. Explain the forces at work when the Mercury orbits the sun. What keeps it in place? Is it moving further away?
  3. Study pictures.
  4. What are the features of this planet? Could they support some kind of life? Why or why not?
