Science Fair Project Ideas - Sharks
Science Fair Projects for Middle and High School

By Denise Witmer, About.com Guide

Sharks first appeared on Earth nearly a half-billion years ago. They have a skeleton made entirely of cartilage, the same flexible material in human ears and noses. There are eight orders and nearly 400 different species of sharks.

According to the Florida Museum of Natural History, three varieties of sharks pose the greatest threat of a potentially lethal attack: the great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias), the tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier) and the bull shark (Carcharhinus leucas).

Project Ideas:

  1. How many gills do most sharks have? What are their fins like? How do they swim?
  2. What do sharks eat? Do all sharks prey on large animals? Which ones do? Why?
  3. Draw a picture of a shark's jaws and teeth. Explain how they use their teeth to hunt prey.
  4. Draw a picture of a shark and label the fins, gills, etc.
  5. Are any types of sharks endangered? Why?
