Dating is such a taboo subject with many parents and their teens that the rules never get truly defined until after they are broken. Or the rules are made in a way that a teen feels under a heavy load to try and pull them all off that they throw caution to the wind and ignore anything you've told them.

That is why it is so important to have a conversation about what is allowed and what is not allowed long before your child has a date. Have those talks about respect of yourself and others, then add, "When you do start dating this is something you'll want to remember." Set your guidelines, "If you come in after curfew Saturday, I'm afraid you'll need to stay in next Saturday. The same rule will apply when you start dating."

Make dating a natural part of growing up by adding it to your conversations.
