Is your teenager capable of taking care of his/her own health issues?

By Denise Witmer, About.com

While this question does go hand-in-hand with hygiene issues, teens are notorious for not taking care of their health. This can be attributed to the fact that youth are generally healthy, so they can ignore their needs with little consequences. But there are many things at college that can hinder your teen’s health, such as group living, stress and non-healthy lifestyle. The most important thing your can teach your teen is not to ignore his/her health.

You should be sure your teen/young adult knows:

  • When and how to call a doctor and make an appointment.
  • How to talk to a doctor, explain symptoms, etc.
  • When and how to call a dentist and make an appointment.
  • How to talk to the dentist, explain symptoms, etc.
  • What the different symptoms of a cold/flu/virus are.
  • What medications to take when you have a cold/flu/virus.
  • When and how to get regular check-ups.
  • The importance of healthy eating and getting enough sleep, especially when you’re sick.
