- Getting good grades in school shows responsibility. If a teen can't turn their homework in on time, its a good sign they are not responsible enough to operate an automobile. Car insurance for teens can be ridiculous and I would not allow my teen to drive without having the good student discount.

Started Small
- We didn't just hand over the keys. Our teens started slowly, with short trips during daylight hours. They had to tell us where they were going and what time they would be back. We discussed which route they should take, and they were restricted as to who could ride with them. (One dependable friend going along is a good thing; more than that is a distraction.)

Motivation to Get Her Own Car
- We allowed our teen daughter to take our one and only car when it helped the family with running around town chores. But, because it was our only car, she was unable to take it to friends. We did allow her to drive, but we would drop her off and pick her up. This motivated her to get a job and her own car.
