Checking In With Your Visiting College Student, Get These Things Done This Summer

Monday June 15, 2009
It's been a little while since your college student has been home. This is especially true if they went away for spring break and you didn't get a chance to catch up. But now that they are home, take some time with your older teen or young adult and see how things are going. Here is a list of what you and your teen should get done while they are at home this summer:
  • Doctor and dentist checkups and appointments. Check with the school to see if they need any tests. For instance, medical students will need to get a new TB test done.
  • Have their car serviced. Go for the gusto and have everything checked out. Preventative maintenance will keep you from having to get it fixed long distance in the coming year.
  • Assess the year and talk about their direction in their field of study. Is the college their attending still giving them what they think they need. Have they started to career plan? Ask them to spend some time this summer plotting out what they can do this coming year to help them in their future.
  • Plan out the coming year's finances. Be clear about what your commitment to your teen's finances is by putting it down on paper.
  • How was the family communication and visits this past year? Talk about what each of you liked and disliked. Make adjustments accordingly.
