With cold season right around the corner, I thought this article would be a good one to share with our community. It seems that abusing prescription and over-the-counter drugs is on the rise among teens. Cold medicine being one of the drugs of choice. This article on HearldNet states:
"Recent data on drug trends in this country show that teens see abusing prescription drugs and over-the-counter medicines as safer than street drugs. In fact, nationwide, teen abuse of prescription drugs is on the rise while the use of street drugs, such as heroin or marijuana, is declining."
What can a parent do to keep their teen from using these drugs? Here are a couple of tips:
- Talk to your teen about the dangers of using too much medicine such as overdose being fatal.
- Know how much medication is in your home and check it regularly. Have a firm rule of your teen asking you before taking any medications.
- Follow other tips given in our How to Raise a Drug-Free Teen guide.

the point is children and teens need guidance from the very early years of their lives. plus a constant reminder every often but in a loving not nagging way will develop a foundation which will give them the strength and courage to resist things that make them enter to such things.
