Teens Who Back Talk to Mom Could Have the Confidence it Takes to Stand Up to Peer Pressure

Follow me on:

A study put out by the journal of Child Development published on December 22, found that teens who 'back talk' their mothers(I believe fathers too, but the study didn't include them.) in a confident way through reasoning, not by being whiny or insulting, are also more likely to do so with their peers and avoid the peer pressure of alcohol and drug use.

The study was conducted by giving 184 seventh and eighth graders from urban and suburban populations in the Southeast, a survey about drug and alcohol use and their friendships, peers and social acceptance. Then while being observed in a lab, teens and their moms were asked to discuss a topic that would prompt argument like money, grades or household rules. (Sounds like fun, huh?)

This goes to show what successful parents of teens already know, giving teens the freedom to make decisions and reason their problems out with role play and talking about tough issues is the way to go - even when our teens feel the need to stand up to us!

Asking our parenting teens community: Do you let your teens or young adults reason with you? Please share your thoughts, opinions and experiences in the comments area.

Reasoning is different from back talking. reasoning is rational discussion. Back talking is, teens being disrespectful, and rude. These teens don’t always stand up to peer pressure, but rather cave in more often.

If teens reason, that’s good, but most often that’s not the case. parentstrainup.org

Hi,very True as Carrell says that ‘Reasoning IS fine’ not back talking…we as parents may ignore it sometimes but at sometime or the other it can make us Explode :( Of course I do try to explain many a time too that this is not acceptable :)
