  • Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban is the third book in the Harry Potter series by JK Rowling. In it we meet Sirius Black, Harry's godfather and the best friend of Harry's father. He has been wrongly accused of killing both of Harry's parents and leading Voldemort to them. He is the Prisoner of Azkaban and who we think is the first person to ever escape from the dementors, a creature that can suck out your soul with a kiss and make you feel so sad just by being near.

We meet two other school chums of Harry's dad as well. RJ Lupin, known to the group of friends as Moony, is the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher and he is a werewolf – although no one has informed the parents. And we though our teens had to put up with some bad teachers. But it turns out that Lupin is one of the best things that has ever happened to Harry. Especially because he teaches how to repel a dementors. Something Harry needs to save Sirius and himself later on in the book. He also meets Wormtail, who was the man who lead Lord Voldemort to the Potter's hiding place and is responsible for Harry's parent's deaths.

Harry is going into his third year at Hogwarts and wants to be able to go into the town with other students his age, but he needs his uncle and aunt to sign a permission slip. They bribe him to do so, he has to be nice to Aunt Marge who is coming to visit. Well, Aunt Marge says things to Harry about his life and his parents that make what the Dursleys spout out seem sweet. So he gets angry with her and blows her up into a big balloon and she floats away. Someone from the Ministry of Magic takes care of her later – something we don't see but the Minister tells Harry she is okay.

Harry then takes the Knight Bus into the Leaky Cauldron and spends his last days of summer there. His friendsmeet up with him and the whole weasley clan is there. Mr. Weasley takes Harry aside, he knows that Sirius has escaped and he asks Harry not to go afte him. This puzzles Harry because he doesn't know why he would go after him and Mr. Weasley doesn't tell him. He does find out later in the book tht it is believed that Sirius betrayed Harry's parents. He was their secret keeper nd he let Voldemort know where James and Lily Potter were hiding. It is also believed that Sirius killed another friend of James', Peter Pettigrew. But Harry then finds out that Sirius isn't the one responsible, Peter is. He saves Sirius from the dementors kiss and his godfather goes into hiding.

When he gets to school all of the students are warned to take extra precautions and not leave the school at night or go off school grounds and the dementors are now 'protecting' everyone from the prisoner of Azkaban, a wizarding prison. He gets by them any way and you know that Ron Hermione and Harry never stay inside the school.

From the time the book starts, you realize that the dementors are working for Lord Voldemort, even if you question their motives when Dolores Umbridge sends them to Harry's town. He escapes attack about 4 times and is grateful for Lupin who shows him how to get rid of the dementors… something he passes on to his friends later in the series.

The book ends with Harry having something he never really had before, family that wants him. Now, at the end of book 3, Sirius is hiding out and can't keep Harry with him, but just knowing that there is someone out there looking out for him, that knows his parents and loves him is more than Harry has ever had. This book was a great introduction into that relationship.
