Do not allow them to fill out their profile, if your ISP has one. Make sure their username is not their real name. Get a blocking software package that does not allow them to type certain words, ie passwords, credit card numbers, foul language. For different software packages, see Safe Surfing for Teens.
Let me take a minute to say something about the foul language in a teen chat room. If you do not want your teen exposed to some eye opening conversation, do not allow any unmonitorated chat. For an example, I spent 45 seconds in a teen chat this morning---that's right, it only took me 45 seconds to get this example.
xxxx1: hello all
xxxx2: @@@@@@ WHAT R U SAYING
xxxx3: LT DONT MAKE ME TOS YOUR SAD @@@
xxxx4: @@@@ it!!!!!
xxxx5: HI ROOM
xxxx6: Like any of us us .?!, and @@@@ IT'S A @@@@@@@ COMPUTER
But, let's face it, your teen wants to chat and make new friends when they are online. Some of the rooms I have listed in my library are loads of fun---they have food fights that you don't have to clean up. They can be educational, such as the Creatative Writing for Kids room. This can be a rewarding experience, and worth the trouble of getting extra software for the family computer. So, turn on the blocking software, set some rules, and watch your teen enjoy his online experiences, safely!
