Communication between school and home is extremely important. Get to know your teen's teachers!
Difficulty Level: average Time Required: 1 hour
Here's How:
- First, make sure you attend. If both parents can't be there, one should be. This lets the school know you are serious about your teen's education.
- Make a plan for every class. Write down 3 or 4 questions to ask.
- Ask your teen for some input.
- Don't allow the teacher to monopolize the time. Let them know you have come prepared to ask a few questions.
- Truly listen to their answers. Don't get into the "not my child" trap. Mull their answers over later when you have more time.
- Take notes. Your teen takes many classes; you will need to remember which teacher said what, so write it down.
- If you walk away with concerns, talk to your teen. But do it the next day, after you have had time to think it over.
- If time becomes an issue, schedule another conference with the teacher before you leave.
