Teens were drinking in our home while we were away. What should we do now?

By , About.com Guide

Question: Teens were drinking in our home while we were away. What should we do now?
Our teen had a party while we were away and there was underage drinking. What should we do?
Answer: While you will need to follow through with disciplining your teen for going against your rules, first you need to think about protecting you and your family. Hire an attorney. You will want to have a lawyer already informed of what happened should you or your teen be brought up on charges. Yes, you can be held legally responsible for what happens in your home, even if you aren't present.

Next, you'll want to tally up the price of anything that is broken and create a bill for your teen to pay off. If you cleaned up the mess of the party, add a fee to the bill. This can be done by working around the house or by getting a part-time job. Be sure that your teen is a part of fixing anything that was broken, or helping with all fines that may be imposed. You want your teen to feel the responsibility of this misdeed, so that they will not be as willing to throw another party.

All in all, the road back to trusting your teen is going to be hard. Start small and work your way back slowly.
