Definition: The term psychotherapy describes the treatment of psychological and emotional problems through the interaction between therapist and patient - a process that can help teens heal, learn new ways of coping and resolve painful situations. In this relationship a therapist works to create an environment in which there is a strong therapeutic rapport that helps provide insight and relief from symptoms.

Psychotherapy is also variously referred to as counseling, therapy or talk therapy. Sigmund Freud is credited for starting psychotherapy with his development of psychoanalysis, which started the formal process of understanding human behavior and mental functioning.

In the treatment of adolescents there are many different types of psychotherapy to include cognitive-behavioral therapy and group therapy, each is based on a slightly different philosophy or approach but the goals are the same, to help troubled teens gain insight into their feelings, emotions and behavior and learn healthier ways to cope. A variety of mental health professionals are qualified to provide psychotherapy to teens.
